The genesis of this project was a conversation in the violin maker’s workshop. Ostensibly I was there to help Giovanni with his English. In reality I was fascinated with the process of violin making. When the lockdown struck I had some preparatory drawings, little more. The rest had to be drawn together from memory. The preparatory images made during this time were invaluable to the creation of this picture.
Painting is a constantly evolving process. This image of Giovanni is a reworking of an earlier portrait.
